WAYNE, N.J. – The No. RV/21 William Paterson women's basketball team (14-1, 8-0 NJAC) built an early lead and never looked back, securing a 71-42 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win over Ramapo (6-9, 1-7 NJAC) Jan. 14 at the Sports and Recreation Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- WP was trailing 4-2 with 6:45 on the clock in the first quarter before taking a 16-point lead (23-7) after closing out the frame on a 21-3 run.
- The Pioneers extended their advantage to 25 (36-11) with 3:13 left in the second quarter following a 13-4 run.
- The lead grew to 28 in the third quarter once senior Renee Wells scored from inside the paint with 2:31 on the clock.
- WP maintained its large advantage the rest of the way and earned the 71-42 home conference win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Wells scored a game-high 28 points after shooting 11-of-17 (.647) from the floor and 5-of-8 (.625) from deep while adding five assists and four steals.
- Senior Patty Walsh went 6-for-10 (.600) from the field for a 13-point performance to go with three blocks.
- Junior Mattison Chiera had nine points and a career-high six steals.
- Graduate student Megan Sears chipped in with nine points and six boards.
- Junior Jada Jacobs reeled in a game-high eight rebounds.
- The Pioneers extended their conference win streak to eight, marking the program's best start to NJAC play since the 20006-07 campaign.
- William Paterson is ranked 21st in this week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Top 25 Poll, and received votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll.
