Canton, NY – Fallon Griffin scored 16 and Bella Doyle added 15 in her return but their efforts were not enough as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team dropped a 68-55 decision to St. Lawrence University on Monday afternoon at Burkman Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights saw their record slip to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence edged forward to 7-3 and 2-1. Clarkson is on the road again this weekend when the team travels to take on Vassar College and Bard College.
Clarkson had an odd first quarter in which it was consistent from beyond the 3-point arc but struggled offensively on anything inside, shooting 4-for-6 from the 3-point line while going 0-for-7 inside of it. Bella Doyle hit a pair of 3-pointers in that stretch and Fallon Griffin an Emma Chambers each added one for Clarkson's 12 points, but St. Lawrence was equally strong from outside and produced 18 points in the opening quarter.
Alexis Kress broke through with a layup to start the second quarter to pull the Knights to within three for a moment, only to see the Saints recover and push the margin to 10 following a Hannah Van Dyke jumper at 6:12. Clarkson hung around and trimmed the deficit to five before settling for a seven-point gap at the half.
Griffin and Doyle hit 3-pointers on back-to-back Clarkson possessions to draw the Knights to within three early in the third quarter and the Knights were staying close at the midway point of the period. However, a Jackie Malley 3-pointer at 5:19 began a spark for the Saints, as St. Lawrence scored 17 points from that make through the end of the period to take its biggest lead of the contest.
The Knights wouldn't let the game get away from them, hanging around after a layup from Elizabeth Aiossa and another 3-pointer from Griffin, which cut the margin to 12 (62-50) with a little over three minutes remaining. The Saints squashed any hope of a Clarkson comeback with back-to-back 3-pointers from Annie Perry and Margaret Dougher.
Clarkson was solid from the perimeter at 9-for-22, but the Saints were a touch better, going 12-for-28 from the arc. Griffin had 16 points to lead the Knights and Doyle added 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting in her return. Addie Kea put up numbers across the board with eight points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. For St. Lawrence, Jackie Malley tossed in a game-high 23 points, shooting 8-for-15 from the floor with four 3-pointers, and Annie Perry added 15 points, also making four 3-pointers.
