REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's basketball team (4-1) defeated University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) 62-43 Saturday afternoon inside Currier Gymnasium where Colbi Zorich became the 12th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
In a slow first quarter the Bulldogs found themselves trailing by six, 8-2, with less than five minutes to play. Andrea Perkins then found Zorich for her second jumper of the game that sparked Redlands to an 8-0 run as they led by three, 11-8, less than three minutes after trailing by six.
It was a back-and-forth second quarter with each team holding leads before another 8-0 run gave the Bulldogs the lead at the half, 26-19.
At the 7:04 mark of the third quarter Zorich pulled down an offensive rebound and scored in the paint to make it an 11-point lead and brought her career point total to an even 1,000 points.
The lead was as large as 19 after Leila Hosn got into the pain in the final minute and the Bulldogs took a 49-32 lead into the final quarter.
In her first game back from a season-ending injury last year, Aliyah Anderson made a jumper in the paint for the first two points of a 7-0 run to begin the fourth quarter.
Hosn had a game-high 14 points along with eight rebounds and five assists. Zorich finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
Despite the dominant win, the offense only shot 31.4 percent from the field, but they had a 14-7 offensive rebound advantage and committed 20 fewer turnovers which afforded them 24 more field goals attempts.
Redlands travels to Puerto Rico where they play Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) and Montclair State University on December 17 and 18.
