Wolves Top Panthers for First Win of the Season

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team earned their first win of the season, defeating the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford 65-50 at the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center on Monday.

First-year guard Courtney Moreau (Brasher Falls, N.Y. / Brasher Falls) led all scorers with 17 points. The guard added five assists and a pair of steals. Fellow first-year Emilee Bacon (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart) recorded her first double-double in her second career game. Bacon scored 12 points and led Keuka College (1-1) with 12 rebounds.

Pitt.-Bradford jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Wolves tied it up in a four-second spurt. Following a pair of made free throws, the Keuka press caused a turnover with Maddie Kramer (Ringtown, Pa. / Nativity BVM) getting the steal and Courtney Moreau laying it in. The visitors took the lead back and extended it to five, 14-9 with two minutes remaining in the frame. The Wolves went on a run, started by a three by Emiley Anderson (Gerry, N.Y. / Cassadaga Valley). A layup by Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) tied the game and Emilee Bacon capped the quarter and 8-0 run for the Wolves with a jumper as Keuka led 17-14 after one.

The run was extended for the Wolves in the second with a jumper by Lillian Mullen (Canisteo, N.Y. / Canisteo-Greenwood) on the opening possession, but Bradford ended it with a three. Keuka College would lead throughout the frame. Courtney Moreau grabbed a defensive rebound for the Wolves and drove right through the Panther defense for a layup to make it 26-20. Keuka continued to extend their advantage. Emilee Bacon found a cutting Brooke Burd (Canisteo, N.Y. / Canisteo-Greenwood) in the final seconds for the basket as Keuka outscored Pitt.-Bradford 23-15 in the second. The Wolves led 40-29 at the half.

The Wolves played with the lead for the duration of the second half. The Green and Gold pushed the lead to 13 on a nice offensive rebound and layup by Emilee Bacon with two minutes remaining to make it 50-37. The Panthers responded with a three, but Keuka answered right back with a triple by Courtney Merlo (Fairport, N.Y. / Fairport). The Wolves took a 53-40 lead into the final quarter.

The Green and Gold put the game away in the final frame. Keuka College outscored Pitt.-Bradford 12-10 in the quarter. Maddie Kramer opened the scoring in the half. Lillian Mullen grabbed a defensive rebound and raced down the court. She found Kramer for a three  to make it 56-40. Later, Emiley Anderson found Courtney Moreau in transition for a three to give Keuka College a 61-42 lead, their largest of the game. The Wolves saw the game out for the 65-50 victory.

  • Keuka College won their second straight over Pitt.-Bradford. The Wolves are now 7-10 all-time against the Panthers
  • Moreau and Bacon each set multiple career highs for the Wolves. Moreau with points and steals, and Bacon with points and rebounds
  • As a team, Keuka College out-rebounded Pitt.-Bradford 46-43. Brooke Burd collected 10 boards for the Wolves
  • Emiley Anderson was third on the team in scoring with eight points, also a new personal best
  • Maddie Kramer set a new career high with four of Keuka's 14 steals in the game
  • The Wolves got out and ran against the Panthers. Keuka College out-scored Pitt.-Bradford 25-4 in transition

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves will look to make it two in a row at home on Friday night. Keuka College will welcome Fredonia State to the JMW Recreation and Athletics Center for a 7 p.m. tip. The Wolves are 8-5 all-time against the Blue Devils but Fredonia has won the last two meetings.
