Waynesburg clinches winning season at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (February 19) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team outscored Franciscan by 23 points in the second half on its way to 79-58 victory in Ohio on Wednesday night.

The Yellow Jackets secure their first winning season since the 2017-18 campaign with a 13-11 overall record and an 8-11 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) mark. Franciscan moves to 2-22, 2-17 PAC.

The Barons led 29-27 at the halftime break but the Jackets shot 22-for-39 (56.4 percent) from the field in the second half. 

Franciscan led 36-32 three minutes into the third quarter before the Jackets embarked on a 16-3 run to establish at 48-39 edge. Waynesburg scored twice in the final minute of the quarter with Madisen Dayton's (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) layup pushing the Jacket lead into double-digits (52-41).

The Barons worked back within six (52-46) early in the fourth quarter before Waynesburg put the game out of reach with a 22-7 run that built a 79-55 lead with two minutes to play. Six different Jackets scored in the run, led by Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown) with eight points and Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) with six.

Henkins scored a career-high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 5-for-10 from three. She added four rebounds and two assists.

Wesolowski set season-highs with 17 points and six blocks. She also collected seven rebounds. Dayton finished with 12 points and six boards. Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) added 10 points and five rebounds.

Waynesburg won the rebounding battle 62-31 and held a 17-5 edge on second chance points. The Jackets had 19 assists on 33 made field goals and finished plus-seven in the turnover column.

The Jackets conclude their season at home against Thiel on Saturday.
