Redlands Women's Basketball wins first SCIAC game after road win at Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's basketball team (4-5, 1-1) defeated California Institute of Technology (Caltech), 68-56, for their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win of the season Wednesday evening.

AJ Wick and Colbi Zorich had the game tied at four in the opening 69 seconds of the game and they used a 13-0 run to take a 15-4 lead in the opening three plus minutes. Leila Hosn found Carly Hicks for the first Bulldog three and Hosn set up Alex Facelo for their second during the run.

The lead was as many as 12, but a scoreless drought of 1:55 to finish the quarter had them up nine, 22-13, after 10 minutes.

10 of the first 12 points in the second came from the Bulldogs as they held their largest lead of the game at 17, 32-15. Leaya McKinney had four points and Kayden Sanders scored off a second chance from her offensive rebound.

Redlands grew their lead to 18 twice and took a 39-24 advantage into the locker room.

Zorich had a 6-2 personal run in the first two plus minutes of the third as she extended the lead to 19, 45-26. Caltech, however, cut it to 12, 54-42, with 2:34 to play. Jenna Schmitt and Wick scored the final three points to maintain their 15-point halftime lead after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter they led by as many as 19 and would not allow the Beavers any closer than 12 to secure the road win.

Wick, Zorich, Hosn, and Facelo all scored in double figures. Wick added 12 rebounds, two blocks, and a steal. McKinney had nine rebounds, a block, and a steal.

The Bulldogs will stay on the road for their fourth in-a-row on Saturday, December 7 at 5:00 p.m. as they play California Lutheran University.
