Potsdam, NY – Despite a slow start, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team picked things up at the start of the second quarter and never looked back, gaining a 58-41 victory over SUNY Poly on Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights edged over .500 at 4-3 on the season while SUNY Poly dropped to 1-5. Clarkson resumes Liberty League play this weekend with home contests against Skidmore College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
SUNY Poly hit a 3-pointer on its first possession of the game, but that would be the only attempt from beyond the 3-point arc that would find its mark in the first half for either team. Clarkson struggled on offense in the opening quarter, not making a field goal until there was 3:23 remaining in the period when Addie Kea nailed a jumper. Clarkson then made two more in the final 70 seconds of the quarter to tie the game, beginning a run where the Golden Knights would never trail again.
Following a pair of free throws to open the second for the Knights and one more for the Wildcats, Clarkson went on a 10-0 run over the course of four-plus minutes, capped by a layup from Emma Chambers with 5:01 remaining. The Wildcats scored at the other end, breaking their scoreless run, but that would be the only basket that SUNY Poly would make in all of the second quarter, as the Knights built a 10-point advantage by the break.
Raelin Burns buried a 3-pointer with 7:14 to go in the third, the first long shot for the Knights in the game. Clarkson briefly doubled-up the Wildcats less than a minute later and held at least a double-digit lead for the rest of the quarter. Addie Kea dropped in a pair of 3-pointers before the third quarter closed, giving the Knights a 15-point margin.
Kate Donnelly hit a 3-pointer for the Wildcats at the 6:27 mark in the final period to reduce the gap to 14 for the visitors, but that would be as close as things would get. When Addie Kea and Emma Chambers hit back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the fourth, it essentially concluded the game as the Knights led by 24. The lead hovered around the 20-mark for the remainder of the game until a late three drew the teams somewhat closer.
Raelin Burns led all scorers with 15 points while both Emma Chambers and Addie Kea contributed 11 points coming off the bench. Bella Doyle was also just short of a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. For the Wildcats, Alivia Turk produced a double-double, scoring 11 points and snagging 10 rebounds.
