The women's basketball team returned to action after 627 days with a 75-56 season-opening win against the Bears of St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on Wednesday night in the ARC Arena.
The Bearcats trailed early against their non-conference opponent from the Skyline Conference, 5-4, but they scored the next 11 points to take a 15-5 lead they won't not relinquish the rest of the night.
Mia Castillo started her intercollegiate career with a triple-double posting 30 points, 14 rebounds and 12 assists to go along with two steals and one block in 34 minutes of action
Valsenia Michie scored the first basket of the 2021-22 season and finished with 14 points shooting 7-of-11 from the field.
Elissa Leung also had a solid debut with 10 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
Leila Deluty also debuted with five points and five rebounds in 13 minutes.
The Bearcats shot 45 percent (35-for-78) and scored 20 points off 18 turnovers by the visiting Bears who struggled shooting 24 percent (17-for-71).
The Bearcats will next travel across the river to New Jersey on Friday to play in the Kean Classic against the hosts Kean University. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
