Mount Union knocks off #23 Marietta

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union upset No. 23 Marietta College 82-60 Wednesday (Jan. 31) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The loss drops Marietta to 17-3 overall and 10-3 in the OAC. The Purple Raiders improve to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the OAC.

Amisha Herd was the lone Pioneer in double figures with 10 points. She also posted four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Laura Pullins added nine points, while Brooke Borich finished with eight. Corrie Burkhardt and Marlo Taylor each grabbed five boards for the Pioneers.

Rachel Tinkey led the Purple Raiders with 17 points and eight rebounds.  Casey Morrissette notched 13 points.

A layup from Jo Herd-Middlebrooks gave Marietta an eight-point lead, 27-19, with 3:02 left in the second quarter. But Mount Union finished the period on a 9-1 run to knot the game, 28-28, at halftime.

The Purple Raiders opened the second half with 14-2 run to go in front by 12 points, 42-30. The lead stayed in double figures for the duration of the game.

For the game, Marietta shot 30.5% (18-of-59) from the floor, 20.0% (4-of-20) from three-point range and 76.9% (20-of-26) at the line. The Purple Raiders were 29-of-56 (51.8%) from the floor, 6-of-16 (37.5%) behind the arc and 18-of-23 (78.3%) at the line.

The Pioneers edged Mount Union on the glass, 38-37. Each team committed 21 turnovers in the game.

Marietta returns home to host Heidelberg University on Saturday (Feb. 3). Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
