No. 13 Carnegie Mellon Rallies Past No. 23 Rochester

PITTSBURG- Rochester's shooting turned ice cold in the third quarter and host Carnegie Mellon surged in front, then pulled away for a 71-62 victory in a women's basketball game at Skibo Gym on Friday evening.
 
The matchup of All-Americans was interesting. Both CMU's Lisa Murphy and Rochester's Alexandra Leslie were Players of the Year in the UAA last season and First Team All-Americans by D3hoops.com. Friday night. Murphy scored 26 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and blocked five shots in 37 minutes. Leslie produced 25 points, 10 rebounds, and one block in 24 minutes.
 
CMU got offensive help from Makayla Filiere with 16 points and Jackie Hudepohl with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Brenna James scored 11 points for Rochester, including three 3-point goals. Lauren Deming had eight points and eight boards. Lizzy Atkinson scored six points, one 3-pointer included.
 
Carnegie, ranked #13 by D3hoops.com, improved to 14-1, 3-1 in the UAA. Rochester, #23 in the D3hoops.com poll, is 11-4, 2-2 in the UAA. On Sunday, Rochester plays at Case (2-2 in the UAA, but the Spartans beat CMU in Pittsburgh) and Carnegie hosts Emory (which beat Case Friday evening in Cleveland).
 
For the game, Rochester hit 24 of 70 from the floor (.343), five of 24 outside the arc (.208), and nine of 16 from the foul line (.563).
 
The defense had some success. Murphy was limited to eight field goal attempts (she made five), but she did make 16 of 17 from the foul line. The Tartan perimeter shooting came around in the second half. Filiere hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third period when CMU outscored Rochester, 15-10, to take a 48-45 lead heading into the final period.
 
UR scored 10 points in the last 1:22 of the game to play thrust-and-parry with CMU. The Tartans were nine of 10 from the line in that stretch as Rochester hit the forced-to-foul stage.
 
Carnegie went cold in the third period and Rochester rallied to take the lead at halftime. James drained a 3-pointer to beat the intermission buzzer and give UR a 35-33 lead.  At the start of the third, the shooting was cold both ways. A trey by Filiere pushed CMU ahead, 39-37, but Deming made a layup and Foley sank a 3-pointer from right wing for a 42-39 UR lead.
 
Hudepohl scored four points (2-2 at the line and a putback) around a fast break layup by Murphy. That put the hosts in front, 45-42 with 4:00 left. Rochester tied it on Leslie's hook shot in the lane and one free throw from Jillian Silvestri. Filiere's second trey of the period put CMU ahead, 48-45.
 
Filiere had two baskets early in the fourth for a 54-47 lead. Rochester gnawed it down to four points, 54-50. Leslie was 1-2 at the line, then hit a 12-footer in the lane. That sparked an 8-0 Carnegie run (six of the points from Murphy). It was 62-50 with 2:22 left.
