SCHENECTADY, NY -- After trailing 34-17 at the half, Union College's women's basketball team rallied to defeat Clarkson University, 63-57 in Liberty League play in the Viniar Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Union improves to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Clarkson drops to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Union took the team's first lead of the second half at 7:48 in the fourth quarter, 46-45 as junior forward Erin Lyons hit a lay-up. Union used an 18-4 run to take control of the contest and never trailed after posting its first lead of the contest in the fourth contest.
Lyons finished with only six points, but hauled in a team-best seven rebounds in leading Union to the league opener. Junior forward Abby Katz finished with a team-high 14 points with six boards and two steals as Union held Clarkson to 32.1% shooting in the second stanza (9-28) and forced 14 second half turnovers. Rookie Sophie Borg tallied nine points and hit 4-of-6 from the floor. Adding to the victory for Union was senior guard Cailin Schmeer as she and sophomore guard Jenni Barra both finished with eight points.
Clarkson's senior forward Ashley Loggins had 19 of her game-high 30 points in the first half and had five rebounds with four steals for the Golden Knights. Sophomore guard Devin Sorell added nine points for Clarkson.
Union returns to action hosting Bard College on January 3 in the Viniar Athletic Center at 2 p.m.,
