(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – Junior guard/forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) scored a season-high 43 points as she led the No. 1-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team to a 91-70 win over Washington & Jefferson College today (Saturday, February 14, 2015) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints remain undefeated as they are 23-0 overall and 16-0 in the PAC. With the loss, the Presidents fall to 17-6 overall and 11-5 in the PAC.
Thomas More jumped out to an early 8-4 lead when senior guard Sydni Wainscott (Erlanger, Ky./Simon Kenton) made a jumper with 17:36 to play in the opening half. The Presidents answered with a 13-6 run to take a 17-14 lead with 11:54 to play in the first half when Katey Wilson made two free-throws. The Saints responded with a 9-3 run capped by a Moss lay-up to take a 23-20 lead with 7:00 to play in the first half. W&J came right back with a 4-2 run to cut the lead to 25-24 when Valerie Dunlap made two free-throws with 5:08 to play in the opening half. Thomas More closed out the half on a 20-5 run to take a 45-29 lead at halftime when Moss made a three-pointer with 11-seconds to play in the half.
The Saints opened the second half on an 11-4 run to extended the lead to 56-33 with 14:27 to play in the game when junior forward Alexa Santamaria (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame). W&J answered with a 14-2 run capped by two Dunlap free-throws to cut the lead to 58-47 with 9:34 to play in the second half. That would be as close as W&J would come as Thomas More closed out the game on a 33-23 run to cruise to the 91-70 victory.
In the game, the Saints out-scored the Presidents 49-18 in the paint and 30-10 off turnovers.
Moss recorded her seventh double-double of the season as she pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Abby Ownings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) just missed double-figure scoring as she had nine points. Moss, Wainscott and junior guard Olivia Huber (Woodlawn, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) led the team in assists with five each.
Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (February 18) when it hosts Chatham University at 5:30 p.m. inside the Connor Convocation Center.
