Late Basket Sparks Hamilton Past Rochester

CLINTON, N.Y. – Theresa Salud scored on a driving layup with 1.3 seconds to play to give Hamilton College a 65-63 victory over the University of Rochester at the Scott Field House on Tuesday evening.

Hamilton clinched the victory when Rylie Manville batted down Brynn Lauer's inbounds pass from the baseline as time expired. Hamilton improved to 8-4 overall. Rochester is 8-3. The Yellowjackets are among others receiving votes in the current Division III polls issued by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and D3hoops.com.

Sam Graber led Hamilton with 22 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Lauren Getman scored 15 points. Caroline Barrett scored 10. Samantha Srinivasan had nine points and Salud scored five – all of them coming at crucial times.

Alexandra Leslie led Rochester with 20 points. She grabbed six rebounds. Kayla Kibling, in her first varsity start, scored 12 points and hit three three-pointers. Kelsey Hurley scored 12 points. Blair Landolfi scored eight points and Tylar Guerrieri had seven points plus six rebounds.

Hamilton took advantage of cold Rochester shooting in the first half and held a 32-24 lead at the break. The Continental lead was still five, 44-39, after Srinivasan hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 13:41 left in the game.

Rochester went on an extended 15-2 run over the next 5:38 to take a 54-46 lead. Hurley had six points in the spurt – she started it with a conventional three-point play. Guerrieri scored four points, Kibling had three, and Leslie scored two. Guerrieri's layup off a fast break put Rochester up by eight with 7:54 remaining.

After Graber and Hurley swapped baskets, the lead was still eight, 56-48, with 6:35 on the clock. That's when Hamilton staged its rally to climb back in it. The Continentals scored 11 straight and 12 of the next 13. (Rochester's point was a Leslie free throw.) Getman and Salud hit three-pointers with the Salud basket bringing the hosts within one, 56-55, with five minutes left. Graber scored four points and after the Leslie free throw, scored off the break for a 61-57 lead with just over three minutes remaining.

Guerrieri's conventional three-point play got it down to one, 61-60. The Yellowjackets tied it on one Leslie free throw at 1:47. Barrett made two free throws with 1:20 left (63-61 Hamilton) but Leslie sank a pair at 1:01 tying the game again.

With the score still tied at 63-63, Rochester had the ball in the closing minute trying to create the best shot. Guerrieri had an open look at a trey from the right corner but the ball bounced off the rim and Srinivasan collected the rebound. She got it to Salud who hesitated just over midcourt, then sped down the lane for a running one hander that fell through.

As a team, Rochester hit .390 from the floor (23-59). The Yellowjackets made 5 of 16 outside the arc (.313) and 12 of 18 at the line (.667). Hamilton sank 21 of 53 from the floor (.396) and a hearty 10 of 18 outside the arc (.556). The Continentals were 13 of 18 from the stripe (.722).

Rochester held a slight 38-35 advantage on the glass. The Yellowjackets committed 17 turnovers leading to 22 Hamilton points. Hamilton committed 17 turnovers leading to 16 Rochester points.

The Yellowjackets return to the Palestra on Saturday when they open the University Athletic Association season against Emory University at 2 pm.
