The Baruch College Bearcats lost 72-62 to the No. 7-ranked Red Hawks of Montclair State University on Sunday afternoon at the Sheraton Parsippany Holiday Tournament in Montclair, New Jersey.
The Bearcats were highly competitive against their third Top 10 opponent in eight games this season.
Iyana Abramsmade a layup to cut the score to 62-60 with 2:15 remaining, but the Red Hawks ended the game with a 10-2 run, which including making 8-of-8 free throws, to walk away with the opening round victory of their tournament.
The Red Hawks (11-0) finished shooting 48 percent (24-for-50) from the field and 20-of-22 from the free throw line. The visiting Bearcats shot 40 percent (25-for-63), but only 10-of-21 from the line.
Francess Henryled the Bearcats with 16 points, three blocked shots and two steals. Sheridan Taylor(14pts, 7rbs, 2stl) and Abrams (12pts, 5rb, 3stl) rounded out the double-figure scorers.
Alicea Ulmeralmost had a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.
Melissa Tobie led the undefeated home team with a double-double of 23 points (8-11 fg), 13 rebounds and six blocked shots.
The Bearcats will play in the third place game on Monday afternoon at 1:00 pm against the loser of tonight's second tournament game between Illinois Wesleyan University and Salisbury University.
