WATERVILLE, Maine --- With the score tied 72-72, Colby College's Carylanne Wolfington (Hallowell, Maine) hit a drive to the basket with 1:24 remaining and then nailed a 3-point shot with 50 seconds left to propel the Mules to a 79-74 season-opening win over University of Massachusetts at Boston in non-conference women's basketball.
The Mules (1-0 overall) will play at Lasell College at 3 p.m. Sunday. UMass-Boston (0-1) also will play Lasell in its next game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Salem State tourney.
The Mules led 40-24 at halftime and seemed to be cruising to an easy win. The Beacons, though, started rebounding in the second half and chipped away at the lead for most of the half.
UMass-Boston took its first lead of the game at 72-71 when Grace Geary (Falmouth, Mass.) scored on a drive with 2:32 to play.
Wolfington started her run of six straight points by going 1-for-2 from the foul line with 1:56 left to tie the contest at 72-72. After Wolfington's drive and trey, Colby's Caitlyn Nolan (Barrington, R.I.) made one of her two free throws for a 7-0 scoring run and a 78-72 lead.
UMB's Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) scored with 15 seconds left to cut the margin to 78-74. Brooke Chandor (Barrington, Ill.) scored the final point of the game on a free throw with 13 seconds to play.
Rebounding and shot selection were two keys to the game. The Mules had a 20-16 rebounding margin at halftime, but the Beacons battled hard in the second half and led 42-33 for the game. Colby shot 53 percent (16-for-30) in the first half only to watch the Beacons shoot 47 percent (18-for-38) in the second half.
Colby had five players in double figure, including co-captain Mia Diplock (Augusta, Maine) with 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Chandor and Nolan both added 16 points, with Chandor shooting 5-for-6 from the field and 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Wolfington added 13 points and four assists, while first-year Haley Driscoll (Bedford, N.H.) had a fine debut with 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting
UMB also had five players in double figures, including two double-doubles in scoring and rebounding. Murphy had 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Mallory Nelson (Topsham, Maine) shot 6-for-9 on the way to 13 points and 10 boards. Katie Mathieu (Coventry, Conn.) added 14 points, Geary had 12 points and six assists, and Katrina Edwards (Springfield, Mass.) just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
