ST. LOUIS, Mo. (Nov. 16, 2013) – After a tough loss on Friday evening, the Sewanee women's basketball team responded with an impressive 78-57 win against MacMurray, Saturday, inside Grant Gymnasium.
After a close start, the Tigers (1-1) opened their lead midway through the first half. Behind stellar defense and timely shooting, Sewanee lead by 14, 33-19, after a 22-11 run over six minute span.
Out of the locker room, the Tigers kept rolling. A three by freshman Haley Lyerly put the Tigers ahead by 11, 38-27, with 19:26 to play.
MacMurray had a small rally before, back-to-back jumpers by Jamie Chauvin and Kayla Sewell started another offensive spurt for Sewanee.
Along with those two scores, Casey Hassett and Clarissa Medley helped the Tigers built an 18-point advantage, 57-39, with 11:04 to go.
From there, Sewanee maintained its lead by outscoring MacMurray 21-18 down the stretch.
Overall, the Tigers made 41 percent of their attempts. Defensively, the Tigers forced a game-high 17 turnovers while Hassett and Sewell combined for 10 blocks.
On offense, Chauvin led the way with a career-high 25 points. She was joined in double figures by Hassett, who finished with a career-high 16 points.
Additionally, Sewell finished with her first double-double this season after she scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Guard Megan Dulsen led MacMurray with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
The Tigers will look to keep rolling with a 6:00 p.m. (EST) contest at regional-rival Covenant, Wednesday.
