Frostburg Wins Consolation Game of Jim Crawley Tourney

FROSTBURG, Md. - After battling for an even first half, the Frostburg State University women's basketball team came out with a strong second half to down Immaculata, 56-49, in the consolation game of the 10th annual Jim Crawley Tournament on Saturday.

Neither team could break away in the first frame with the biggest lead margin by a mere three points. The lead changed six times and the score was tied seven times despite efforts from sophomore guard Ronje' James who led Frostburg State (1-1) with six points, three rebounds, two blocks, a steal and an assist. Going into halftime FSU was up 21-20.

The Bobcats fought to get a lead to start the second half with a jumper from Elaina Hummel but Immaculata answered right back with a jumper from Alison Zimney and an outside shot from Meghan Gallagher to put the Mighty Macs up 26-23.

Frostburg tied it back up with one of Elaina Hummel's four three pointers of the afternoon. The Bobcats found themselves down by five points with 11 minutes to go after Sara Smith hit back-to-back layups.

The Bobcats battled back with a layup by James. On the defensive end the next play, senior point guard Stephanie Straka grabbed a steal and broke away for two more points. The Bobcats stole the lead when senior Brynn Arnone stepped up and hit two free throws after getting fouled by Katie Durkin.

The game remained close throughout the final minutes with the score knotted at 47-47 with 2:58 left in regulation. James who ended the day with 15 points and eight rebounds hit a shot to break the tie. The Bobcats would hold the lead through the rest of the game as Hummel hit the long ball and two free throws. It was James to seal the deal with two more from the line to set the score at 56-49.

Hummel, who grabbed all-tournament team honors, led all scorers with 20 points, she also contributed nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. James and Straka both hit double digits with Straka finishing with 10 points, two assists and four steals.

Frostburg returns to play Tuesday afternoon when the Bobcats travel to non-conference opponent Penn State Altoona for a 4 pm contest.
