Heidelberg Women’s Basketball Team Falls to Baldwin-Wallace, 67-48, in Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio—Sophomore guard Kathleen Phillips (Sandusky/St. Mary's) scored a game-high 16 points, but the Heidelberg University women's basketball team fell to Baldwin-Wallace College, 67-48, tonight in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Seiberling Gymnasium in Tiffin, Ohio. The win was the 20th straight for B-W in the all-time series.

In addition to Phillips, who scored 12 of her 18 points in the first half and tallied four steals, Heidelberg (4-14, 1-10 OAC) received eight points from freshman guard Paige Ricketts (Mineral City/Tusky Valley) and a team-high six rebounds from junior forward Molly Schriber (Sidney).

Baldwin-Wallace (11-7, 6-5 OAC) was led by Jessica Lairson with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists and Lexi Rohrbach with 11 points and seven boards. Catherine Spisak pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Staunch defense on both sides of the ball limited both teams to a combined 37.0 (20-of-54) percent shooting and 48 points in the first half.

The Yellow Jackets built a 7-2 lead during the first few minutes, but Heidelberg scored six straight points to take its first lead of the game at 8-7 when sophomore guard Emily Giel (Burton/Burkshire) canned a three-pointer at the 14:52 mark.

Both teams traded baskets on the next two possessions and Phillips made a free throw and a pair of jumpers to extend the 'Berg lead to 15-9 by the 7:15 mark, the largest lead of the half by either team.

The Yellow Jackets closed to within 15-14, but Giel put Heidelberg ahead 18-14 with another triple.

An 8-0 B-W run that spanned nearly the final six minutes of the first half gave the Yellow Jackets a 22-18 advantage with 1:36 to play in the opening period

A lay-up and a jumper by Ricketts and another jumper by Phillips tied the score, 24-24, entering the intermission.

A three-point by Miller opened the second half for Heidelberg with a 27-24 lead.

The Yellow Jackets scored nine straight points and took a 33-27 lead at the 16:58 mark when Jessica Carpenter sank her second three-point during the run. B-W extended its run to 18-3 and took its first double-digit lead of the game at 42-40 when Lairson canned a three-pointer at the 14:06 mark. B-W would also extend its lead to 20 points with less than eight minutes to play and cruised to the victory.

The Berg shot 31.9 (15-of-47) percent from the field, including 23.8 (five-of-21) percent in the second half and 20.0 (three-of-15) percent from three point range.

The Yellow Jackets shot 36.9 (21-of-57) percent from the field and 73.1 (19-of-26) percent from the charity stripe and held a 44-34 advantage in rebounds.

Heidelberg next plays Saturday, Jan. 28 when it hosts Muskingum University at 2 p.m. in the first game of a Shoot for the Cure/Coaches vs. Cancer men's and women's doubleheader. All proceeds will be donated to charity. In addition, the women's basketball team will hold its annual Alumni Game at 12 p.m.
