Warhawks Top Platteville on the Road

More news about: UW-Whitewater

UW-W never trailed in the first, although the score was so close that there wasn't much difference between leading and trailing.  Twice tied, UW-W's largest lead came at 5:24 on a layup by senior forward Chantel Burg.  The Warhawk lead was 29-25 at the half.

Whitewater's first half margin came at the free throw line, where UW-W went 6-6.  Platteville was 2-2 in the first half.  UW-W junior center Cortney Kumerow led both teams with 13 points in the half, going 4-4 from the field and 5-5 from the line.  Junior forward Ashley Henry led UW-P with nine points, and sophomore center Kim Wellnitz topped both teams with five rebounds.

It took less than a minute into the second half for UW-P to take its first lead.  Danielle Hopkins, a sophomore guard, made a jump shot at 19:21 to put the Pioneers up 30-29.  Platteville bumped that lead to three points, three times, but senior forward Chantel Burg's layup at 17:28 took the lead back for UW-W, 37-36.   Still holding a one point lead at 40-39, UW-W scored the next eight points, including a pair of baskets by sophomore guard Katie Burke, to lead 48-39 with 12:02 on the clock.   Whitewater also led by nine at 11:21, 51-42, and at 8:38, 53-44.

Down by nine, Platteville used a 7-0 spurt to close within 53-51 at 6:57 and again at 55-53.  Whitewater increased the margin to seven, and sophomore guard Mary Merg made sure UW-W held it.  Merg made a free throw with 2:37 left, a jumper with 1:12 left, and two more charity tosses at 0:24 as Platteville tried to foul to stop the clock.  The final score, 66-55 was the largest margin in the game.

Free throws continued to be a major factor in the game, with UW-P going to the line just five times, making four.  Whitewater was 12-14.

Kumerow ended up with 20 points on 6-8 from the field and 8-9 from the line.  Merg wound up with 13.  Burg dished out five assists and Kumerow shared game high honors with nine boards.  Henry scored 12, Hopkins 11 and Wellnitz 10 for UW-P.  Wellnitz added nine rebounds.

PV is 6-10 overall and 2-4 in the WIAC.
