DOVER, Del. - Division I Delaware State used a 15-0 run early in the first half to break open a tie game and went on to defeat Wesley College 85-53 in the Wolverines' season opener.
Wesley was led by Jazmine Miller (Dover, Del./Dover) who scored 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-5 from three point range. She also added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Center Heather Fuller (Greenwood, Del./Sussex Tech) also reached double figures with a career-high 12 points and added two steals and two blocks. She went 4-of-5 shooting and sank all four of her free throw attempts. Rachelle Allen (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) tied Fuller for the team-lead with five rebounds.
Aleisha Hobbs (Salisbury, Md./Mardela) gave Wesley three players in double figures as the freshman forward scored 10 points in her collegiate debut on 4-of-8 shooting.
A lay up by Miller just over three minutes into the game tied the score at 6-6, but Uchechi Ahaiwe started the Hornets' early run with six points in less than a two-minute span. She scored eight of her 12 points during the run.
Tierra Hawkins led all players with 22 points and added 12 boards for a double-double. She was 7-of-13 shooting and 8-of-10 from the free throw line. Ahaiwe also had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Deanna Harmon had 12 points and a game-high five assists. Chelsea Dukes came off the bench to shoot 5-of-7, including 3-of-5 from distance, for 15 points.
Wesley faces DeSales in the opening round of the Starter's Pub Tipoff Tournament on November 18 and will play in either the championship or consolation game on November 19.
