CORTLAND, N.Y. – Bri Dunton (Middlesex/Marcus Whitman) and Melissa Graham (Orchard Park/Mt. Mercy) led a balanced attack with 11 points apiece as Geneseo defeated Cortland, 61-52, in a SUNYAC matchup.
The Knights, who entered the game already guaranteed the SUNYAC regular-season title, improve to 21-3 overall and 16-1 in the league. Cortland is now 17-6 overall and 12-5 in the conference, and will finish as the fourth seed for the league tournament regardless of its outcome Saturday versus Brockport in the final game of the regular season.
Khadija Campbell (Middletown) finished with nine points and eight rebounds, Brittany Finkle (Windsor) added seven points, six rebounds and three steals and Katelyn Charbonneau (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored seven points to contribute to Geneseo's victory.
Senior Jennifer Patten (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford) was Cortland's lone double-figure scorer with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Junior Micki Volpini (Newfield) finished with nine points and eight rebounds, junior Caryn Crary (Skaneateles) scored a career-high eight points and added five rebounds and three steals, and junior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) dished out five assists.
Cortland entered the game shooting 36.9 percent as a team from three-point range, but made only 8.3 percent of its long-distance shots (2-of-24). Patten made Cortland's first three-point attempt 44 seconds into the contest, but the Red Dragons missed their next 20 treys before Volpini hit a shot from the left corner with 4:35 left in the game.
Geneseo led by 12 points twice in the first half and held a 34-26 halftime lead. The Knights were ahead by 13 at 52-39 after a Dunton jumper with 8:03 remaining before Cortland mounted a comeback bid. The Red Dragons scored nine of the next 11 points, capped by Volpini's three-pointer, and were within 54-50.
The guests, however, went up by seven after a Campbell three-point play with 3:24 left. Cortland was back within six after Patten's layup with 1:20 on the clock. The Red Dragons, however, missed a three-pointer with 41 seconds left and Geneseo hit 3-of-4 foul shots in the final 26 seconds to ice the game.
