ROCKFORD, Ill. -- Alverno College fell to host Rockford College 74-62 this afternoon at the Seaver Center in Rockford, Ill. The Regents trailed 54-46 with 12:44 remaining in the game, but outscored the Inferno 28-8 the rest of the way for the victory.
After holding the Regents (10-11, 8-6 Northern Athletics Conference) to just 32 percent (11-of-34) shooting in the first half, the Inferno defense allowed 44 second half points on nearly 70 percent shooting (16-of-23) in the second period.
Alverno, which led the conference in free throws attempted per game coming into the contest, was not given an opportunity at the foul line in the second period, while the Regents made 23 trips to the charity stripe in the half and 29 in the game. The Inferno (9-12, 6-9) connected on 4-of-5 free-throw attempts in the first half.
Gabby Allen (Milwaukee, Wis./Bay View) paced four Inferno players in double-figures with 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting and snagged seven rebounds. Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) added 12 points, while freshman Kristen Speerschneider (New Franken, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) and Alyssa Jensen (Cudahy, Wis.) chipped in 11.
Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) had a team-high eight rebounds and a game-high five assists, and Speerschneider had a game-high five steals.
Rockford was led by Megan Lawler's 27 points (10-of-10 shooting) and 10 rebounds.
Alverno is next in action on Tuesday in a NAC game versus visiting Maranatha Baptist. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Reiman Gymnasium.
