The sixth-ranked Quakers played their second straight game in Virginia, taking on the Lynchburg Hornets. Despite going down by double digits early on, the visitors ultimately prevailed in a decisive 73-60 victory.
The away side was on the ropes early, as Lynchburg (10-11, 5-7) amassed an eighteen-point lead, halfway through the quarter (22-4). Down, but not out, the Quakers (19-2, 10-2) immediately showed their offensive prowess, replying with a 19-3 run to snatch the lead with 4:45 left in the period (23-22).
Fighting down the stretch, both squads continuously traded buckets, but Guilford took a one-point lead off a Julius Burch layup heading into the locker rooms. At half, GC was up 32-31.
Out of the intermission, the first two minutes were scoreless, until a Tyler Dearman driving layup put the Quakers up by three (34-31). The home side kept the score close, however. Guilford's largest lead at this point was only six, at 46-40 with 12:37 left on the clock. The Hornets then proceeded to drop a trio of makes beyond the arc to propel them back into the lead, with 9:44 remaining (49-46).
The Quakers then took matters into their own hands, scoring 14 of the game's next 18 points, en route to a seven-point advantage heading down the stretch. This run included three layups from Burch, plus a pair of three-pointers from Caleb Farrish. Guilford led 60-53 with 4:39 to play.
The Hornets brought the game to as close as two scores (62-58), but was the closest they would get to the Quakers. Dearman sealed victory for the away side with nine of his team's last 11 points, winning by an eventual 13-point margin (73-60).
Dearman willed Guilford to the win with a game-leading 24 points, to go along with four steals. Burch recorded his seventh double-double of the season, with 17 points and 12 rebounds, shooting 8-10 (80%) from the field. Farrish finished with an efficient 16 points (5-8 FG), and Luke Proctor was the other Quaker in double figures with 13 points.
As a team, the Quakers were once again efficient from the foul line, making 17-19 free throws (89.5%). The visitors also led in steals (6-1) and in the points off turnovers margin (18-5).
GC returns back to Ragan-Brown for the first time in 10 days, for a pivotal conference contest versus Shenandoah. Tip-off on Saturday, February 3 is set for 3 p.m.
