ANGOLA, Ind. - It was a tough night for the Trine University men's basketball team as they allowed a season-low 53 points to their opponent, but managed just 42 as they fell to Adrian College. The loss is the Thunders first in the conference and snaps their three game winning streak. Trine's record now stands at 9-5 on the season and 2-1 in the MIAA.
Both teams struggled shooting from the floor in the first half and neither team as able to sink a bucket over the final 3:30 of the half. Adrian opened the game on a 6-0 run before the thunder battled back to take their only lead of the game at 10-9 on a layup by junior Scott Rogers (Waterford, Mich./Kettering). Adrian's Cody Barnes was fouled shooting a three-pointer on the following possession, and made two-of-three to put the Bulldogs ahead for good. Adrian hit just 10-of-26 (38.5%) in the half while the Thunder went 9-of-30 (30%) from the floor.
The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 13 points as they opened the second half on an 11-5 run to lead 39-26. The Thunder would cut into the Adrian lead late in the half outscoring the Bulldogs 12-5. Trailing by just seven at 49-42 with 2:33 remaining, the Thunder offense was unable to score the rest of the way. Trine managed just one shot over the final two minutes as the Bulldogs were able to hold on.
Junior Ian Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian) led the Thunder with a game-high 16 points, including sinking four shots from behind the arc. Rogers also scored in double figures, adding in 10 points. Senior Time Pearcy (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) added in five points to go along with four rebounds. Freshman Dustin Hall (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side) led the Thunder with a six rebounds.
The Thunder defense was able to force 18 Adrian turnovers, but managed to turn them into just 13 points. On the other side, the Bulldogs were able to convert nine Trine turnovers into nine points. Although the Thunder were held to a season-low 42 points, the 53 Adrian scored was also the fewest they have allowed to an opponent and was a season-low for the Bulldogs. Trine has now dropped the last six games against the Bulldogs.
Trine will look to bounce back as they travel to Albion College to face the Britons at 3:00 p.m.
