Pacific athletic director Ken Schumann will wrap up his four-term
on the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Committee by
taking over as the group's chair. He replaces David Martin,
athletic director at Misericordia, whose term on the committee is
up.
Schumann's tenure as chair of the committee begins on Sept. 1. In that role, he will oversee the group that develops policies and procedures governing the administration of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championships, including site selection as well as evaluation and selection of the participating teams.
Schumann began his tenure as the committee's west region representative in 2008. Previously, he had served as a member of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball West Region Advisory Committee from 2000 to 2004.
"It is a great honor for me to be selected to chair this important NCAA committee," Schumann said. "I am looking forward to working with the committee, the regional advisory committees, NCAA staff and the coaches and administrators in Division III to further enhance the championship experience for our student-athletes."
As chair, Schumann will oversee the process of selecting sites and team's for the 2012 Division III NCAA Tournament, including determining pairings for the entire bracket. During the season, he will lead the process of determining regional alignment and allocations as well as the publishing of regional rankings. As in his first three years with the committee, Schumann will also assist with on-site administration of tournament sites as well as the site of the championship game at Salem, Va.
"I am fortunate to follow a couple of great chairs in Charlie Brock and Dave Martin and I look forward to working with the talented individuals on this committee to build on the progress which as been made over the last few years in producing a top-quality championship."
Schumann has a broad base of experience in basketball. Prior to becoming Pacific's director of athletics in 2004, Schumann spent 13 years as Pacific's men's basketball coach. The winningest coach in program history with 152 victories, Schumann was named the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1997 and was named the Little All-Northwest Coach of the Year in 1997. He led the Boxers to an appearance in the 1997 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament, the school's first since 1940, and the 2000 Division III Men's Basketball NCAA Tournament.
