MEQUON, Wis. – Facing a win or go home game at top seeded Concordia University Wisconsin, the Edgewood College men's basketball team need at least one player to step up if they were going to claim the road victory. Ben Wisniewski and Kent Faurote led the Eagles as they combined for 53 points in the Eagles 95-89 to move the Eagles into the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament Championship game.
The Falcons (23-4) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Jake Guziewski connected on a three-point basket, his only points of the game, to get the Eagles on the board. Wisniewski followed with back-to-back triples to put the Eagles (18-9) up 9-7 just over three minutes into the game. Luke Doedens tied the game on the Falcons' next trip down the court, but Faurote answered with two of his career-high 27 points to give the Eagles a lead.
Faurote nailed a three-point basket with 6:24 left in the first half to give the Eagles a 29-21 lead, their largest of the half. Concordia Wisconsin then began to come back, scoring nine of the next 12 points to make the score 33-30 with just under four minutes left in the first half. Wisniewski and Faurote hit consecutive jump shots to push the lead back to seven. Wisniewski then gave the Eagles a six point advantage when he made a three-point basket with 19 seconds left in the half. However, the Falcons' Matt Paluchniak had an answer as he drilled a three-point shot with three seconds left to make the halftime score 40-37 in favor of the Eagles.
In the first half, the Eagles shot 47.1 percent (16-for-34) from the floor, but they went 60 percent (6-for-10) from long range. The Falcons only shot 40.7 percent (11-for-27) in the first frame from the floor and went 2-for-10 from three-point range.
Concordia Wisconsin opened the second half on a run as the quickly cut the deficit to 42-41 just two minutes into the stanza. However, the Eagles weathered the storm and answered with six straight points, four coming from Derek Nkemnji to push the lead back to 48-41. After the teams exchanged baskets, Faurote made a jump shot to put the Eagles back up seven. Those two points were Faurote's 1,000 and 1,001 of his career.
The Falcons came right back and scored 11 of the next 15 point to tie the contest at 52 with 13:57 left. On the next trip down the floor, Wisniewski got fouled on a three-point attempt. The junior made all three free throws to give the Eagles a lead they would not relinquish. A couple possessions later, Jeff Barczak got fouled on the block, and the Falcons got a technical foul, giving the senior four free throws. Barczak made all four and the Eagle lead was quickly 62-55 with 12:16 remaining.
Concordia Wisconsin got their deficit down to one point twice, the last coming at 73-72 with 4:32 left, but Faurote answered with three point play and Wisniewski drained another triple to give the Eagles a 79-74 lead. Wisniewski then made a layup and Cashton Craig made one of his three three-point baskets to give the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 84-74 with 2:11 remaining.
From that point on, the Falcons began fouling in an attempt to come back and extend the game, but the Eagles went 10-for-13 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the 95-89 victory. The win is Edgewood College's first win over a ranked team, as Concordia Wisconsin was ranked 21st in the country, since December 29, 2009 when the Eagles defeated 24th ranked University of Chicago.
Edgewood College rebounded to shoot 59.3 percent in the second half, and finished the game with a 52.5 field goal percentage, including 52.9 percent (9-for-17) from three-point range. The Eagles also went 22-for-26 (84.6 percent) from the free throw line. The Falcons shot 51.7 percent for the game, but went 7-for-24 (29.2 percent) from long range. Edgewood College only committed eight turnovers in the game while the Falcons only made six miscues all game.
Fauote led the Eagles with 27 points to go along with 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season while Wisniewski tied a season-high with 26 points. Craig scored 14 points, Barczak tallied 13 and Nkemnji rounded out five Eagle scorers in double figures with 10 points.
For the Falcons it was Skip Newton-Kemp that led five scorers in double figures with 27 points. Paluchniak scored 16 and Doedens tallied 13 points.
The Eagles move on to face Benedictine University on Saturday, February 26 for the NAC Tournament Championship. Benedictine will provide both live video and live stats for the 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
