New London, CT --- Senior Jeffrey Robinson (Granby, CT) had a game-high 29 points and six assists off the bench and WPI, ranked 23rd nationally, scored the first 20 points of the second half in beating Coast Guard 78-59 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEMWAC) game on Saturday.
WPI beat Coast Guard for the ninth straight time in the regular season and won its sixth straight this year to improve to 13-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play while Coast Guard drops to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in NEWMAC action.
Coast Guard trailed by just five at 36-31 at halftime despite missing ten free throws in the first half (11-21). The Bears were just 14 of 29 from the foul line in game.
WPI came out on fire in the second half with junior Matt Carr (Somersworth, NH) scoring six of the first nine points to ignite the Engineers 20-0 run as WPI took a commanding 56-31 lead with 13:52 left in the game.
Coast Guard did not go quietly as the Bears responded with a 16-3 spurt with sophomore Ed Gailor (Lancaster, PA) scoring eight of those points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to cut the deficit to 59-47 with 9:48 left.
Gailor was red hot in the second half and had 14 of his career-high 16 points in the half to lead the Bears. He was four for six from 3-point range, all four buckets coming a span of just over three minutes.
WPI scored the final nine points of the game following a basket by Jevon James (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) made the score 69-59 with 4:23 left.
Carr finished with 14 points while senior Kyle Nadeau (Webster, MA) had 13 points and five assists in the win. Senior Ben Etten (Hollis, NH) had seven points and a team-high seven rebounds as WPI outrebounded the Bears 41-34.
Senior Adam Radtke (Valley City, OH) added 15 points for Coast Guard while freshman Kevin Sowers (Monrovia, MD) had 13 points. James had eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
WPI shot 50 percent from the floor (29-58) while hitting 10 of 17 from 3-point range (58.8 percent).
Coast Guard shot 35.8 percent from the field (19-53) and made seven of 14 from behind the arc.
WPI is back in action on Tuesday, traveling down Park Ave to face city rival Clark a 7pm. The game will be televised locally on TV Charter 3. Coast Guard hosts New London for Connecticut College Monday at 7pm.
