ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team shot 53 percent and forced 28 turnovers en route to a 94-76 American Southwest Conference win over Sul Ross State on Thursday night at the Mabee Complex.
HSU broke open a tight early contest with a 17-0 run from the 13:44 mark to the 11:18 mark of the first half. Junior guard Matt Addison scored 10 of the 17 points in the run and Sul Ross never trimmed the deficit to less than 11 points the rest of the night.
The Cowboys pushed the lead to 73-50 with 13:29 to play, but Sul Ross tried to make it interesting. The Lobos went on a 13-2 run to cut it to 75-63 with 10:51 to play. HSU then scored the next six points and the game was never below 16 the rest of the way.
HSU, who ranks fifth nationally in turnover margin, had 10 fewer turnovers than the Lobos and took 17 more shots. HSU shot 35-for-66 for the game.
Addison led five Cowboys into double figures with 25 points. Dustin Massey had 14 points, Derrick Jefferson and Aaron Thornton had 11 points each and John Derr had 10.
Jimmy Martinez led the Lobos with 20 points and Bralyn Thomas added 15 off the bench.
The Cowboys have won three games in a row and are 8-5 in on the season and 7-2 in ASC West play. Sul Ross State fell to 6-8 overall and 5-5 in league play. HSU hosts Howard Payne on Saturday at 3 p.m. to close out its four-game home stand.
