Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team was handed its first home loss of the season and allowed a season-high point total in a 110-90 loss to visiting St. Joseph's-L.I. on Thursday night. Five Mount Saint Vincent players reached double-figures led by a career-high 20 points from freshman Chris Bonaventura (Staten Island, N.Y.).
After the two teams traded buckets in the early going, the Golden Eagles used a 19-4 run in the middle stages of the first half to open a 42-19 lead with 8:02 left before the intermission. Over that time the Dolphins went nearly three minutes without scoring a point.
Overall St. Joseph's-L.I. shot 54.1-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and got 12 points off the bench from Olivier Laurent. The Golden Eagles also knocked down seven three-pointers in the half on their way to a 55-40 advantage.
Mount Saint Vincent would put together a big run over the first seven minutes of the second half to whittle the St. Joseph's lead down to just four with 13:07 left in regulation. Bonaventura scored eight points in that stretch and his three-pointer to cap the spurt brought the Dolphins to within 69-65.
The Dolphins would keep the deficit under double-figures until a key moment in the contest. Trailing 74-67 with 11:47 left, the Mount was whistled for an intentional foul and the Golden Eagles took full advantage, knocking down both free-throws and converting a lay-in on the ensuing possession. Their lead grew from seven to 11 and the Dolphins would only be able to pull within nine points the rest of the way.
Bonaventura finished the night 7-for-12 from the field and also chipped in with five boards, two assists and two steals. Mark Waite (Chicago, Ill.) continued his strong play with his second double-double in three games. He finished the night with 14 points, a career-high 18 rebounds and was tied for the team lead with four assists.
Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) netted 17 points on the night for the Dolphins and dished out four assists. Dino Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) added 13 second half points and George Naldjieff (Miami, Fla.) matched his career-high with 12 points.
For the game, Mount Saint Vincent shot an even 48-percent from the floor, but went 6-for-22 from behind the arc. The Dolphins also struggled from the charity stripe, going 12-for-22 and the transition game was owned by the visitors who held a 24-10 edge in fast break points.
Overall on the night, St. Joseph's-L.I. shot 55.1-percent from the floor and a blistering 50-percent (12-for-24) from three-point range. Steve Velazquez led the way with 25 points and went 7-for-10 from behind the arc on the night. He led three visitors with at least 20 points, as Laurent poured in 23 and Vincent Russo added 20.
The loss snaps a mini two game wining streak for the Dolphins and drops them to 12-3 overall on the season and to 7-3 in the Skyline Conference. Mount Saint Vincent will look to rebound in a key league road contest on Tuesday when it travels to Mount Saint Mary. Tip-off in Newburgh with the Knights is slated for 7:00 p.m.
