GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart basketball team made more than 57 percent of its shots and forced Elmira into 21 turnovers on the way to a 93-64 non-conference victory in Bristol Gym tonight. First-year forward Richie Bonney led three Statesmen in double figures with 15 points.

Hobart sophomore guard Stefan Thompson put the home team in the lead with the game's opening basket. Appropriately enough, the layup was set up by a Matt Pebole steal. Thompson scored 14 points, while Pebole added 12.

On the next trip down the floor, senior guard Mark Bruce came up with a steal for the Statesmen (2-1) and earned a trip to the free throw line. He sank both shots for a 4-0 lead. Elmira senior guard Bobby DiPiazza answered with a three pointer to make it a 4-3 game. Senior guard Tim Llewellyn (8 pts., 7 asst.) converted a pair from the stripe, followed by another triple by DiPiazza, tying the game 6-6. It was the only tie of the game.

Thompson's steal and layup three and a half minutes in, put Hobart in front for good and kick-started an 11-2 run for the Statesmen.

Junior guard Eric Klinedinst converted a four-point play to pull the Soaring Eagles within three, 17-14, at the 12:29 mark. Elmira (1-3) would not get within a single possession of Hobart the rest of the way. Bonney hit his first collegiate three to double the Statesmen lead, then converted two freebies after senior guard Brian Burbank came up with a steal.

Hobart kept its lead between five and 11 points for the remainder of the opening half, carrying a 43-33 lead into the break. The Statesmen dominated in the paint, outscoring the Soaring Eagles 20-6, and thrived on points off turnovers (22-9).

After shooting 56 percent from the floor, including 3-of-7 on threes, in the opening 20 minutes, Hobart was even sharper in the second half. The Statesmen sank 58.8 percent of its shots after the break, draining 7-of-13 from long range.

Early in the second half, Hobart hit threes on three straight trips down the floor, the first two by Llewellyn, followed by one from Pebole, highlighting a 14-4 run that stretched the lead to 20.

From that point on, Elmira was unable to get its deficit under 19. The lone highlight in the second half for the Soaring Eagles was DiPiazza's layup at the 11:18 mark that raised his career scoring total to an even 1,000 points. He was the only Elmira player to hit double figures, logging a game-high 17 points to finish the night with 1,005 career points.

Senior guard Ryan Young gave the Statesmen a spark off the bench, celebrating his 21st birthday with eight points, including the first two three-pointers of his career.

Hobart will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 27, when the Statesmen host D'Youville. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 4 p.m. Fans unable to attend the game can follow the action online with All-Access Video and Live Stats.
