Tuesday wrap: Rivals set up a rematch

Scott Masin hit two free throws with 11.2 seconds left and DePauw couldn't answer as the fifth-seeded Wittenberg Tigers won at the fourth-seeded DePauw Tigers in the NCAC quarterfinals

It's the first time in 24 years in the North Coast Athletic Conference that Wittenberg played a quarterfinal game on the road. The Tigers are now 22-2 in quarterfinal games.

The win sets up a rematch with archrival Wooster, the No. 1 seedOhio Wesleyan and Kenyon will meet in the other semifinal.

Chris Burton scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds as top-seeded Rhode Island College survived No. 8 seed Mass-Dartmouth 62-58 in the Little East Conference quarterfinals. The Anchormen host Southern Maine on Friday night, while Eastern Connecticut plays Keene State.

UW-Platteville survived two missed free throws with two seconds left and held on to win at UW-La Crosse 60-58 in the first round of the WIAC tournament. Chas Cross led all scorers with 23 points and added 19 rebounds in the win. Platteville advances to play at top seed UW-Stevens Point. UW-Stout won the other first-round game, as Chris Hortman came off the bench for 21 points in 25 minutes, and will travel to UW-Whitewater.

Vince Kmiec played all 45 minutes and scored 23 points on 8-for-16 shooting to help lead No. 5 North Central (Ill.) past No. 3 Illinois Wesleyan 87-83 in overtime. The win ended Illinois Wesleyan's unbeaten run through the CCIW, continuing a 40-year streak in which nobody has run the table in the league.

Cabrini and Keystone will meet in the CSAC title game on Friday night. Keystone played just seven in its win against Gwynedd-Mercy, led by Duncan Lunsford's 32 points.

Women's roundup

St. Mary's (Minn.) rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit, riding a 19-4 run to defeat Gustavus Adolphus 76-69 in the MIAC first round. Jamie Stefely scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Cardinals, who improved to 22-4. St. Benedict advanced in the other first-round game, defeating Hamline 86-79. Brianna Barrett scored a game-high 28 and Whitney Canton went 13-for-13 from the line en route to 23.

St. Mary's plays at St. Thomas, while St. Benedict travels to Concordia-Moorhead in the conference semifinals.

Cortland State had a streak of 17 consecutive SUNYAC semifinals snapped as Oswego State edged the Red Dragons 38-35 on Tuesday night. Oswego's leading scorers, Meagan Stover and Jenn Robbins scored seven points each as neither team shot better than 25 percent from the floor and the teams combined to shoot 16 percent from beyond the arc.

No. 1 DePauw started the game on a 19-2 run and it never got much better for Hiram as DePauw beat the Terriers 72-35. Allegheny, Wittenberg and Kenyon each advanced in the NCAC tournament as well. Dubuque got 41 points from Mollie Whiting in beating Luther 80-74 in overtime, while crosstown rival Loras beat Coe in overtime to advnce in the IIAC playoffs.
