The three conference races in Upstate New York are shaping up to be great ones. Cortland State pulled Geneseo State back to the pack in the SUNYAC while Stevens stayed a half-step ahead in the Empire 8.
Cortland State defeated conference leader Geneseo State 79-73 and chopped the Blue Knights' lead to a half-game over the Red Dragons and two other teams. Plattsburgh State held off New Paltz State 75-70 to keep pace and Oswego State beat Brockport State 76-68 to increase the log jam near the top. SUNYAC standings
In the Empire 8, No. 24 Stevens topped Nazareth 74-64 to stay undefeated in conference play. Elsewhere Travis Warech's dunk put Ithaca up 90-87 with five seconds left and St. John Fisher missed a potential game-tying three-pointer. Stefan Thompson scored 20 points to lead Hobart to a 65-57 road victory over St. Lawrence. The Statesman have won five of six games, with the lone loss out of conference, to take first place in the Liberty League.
Rochester, which is the top-ranked team in Upstate New York, kept rolling on Friday night. The Yellowjackets took care of Carnegie Mellon 72-63 as Rochester outscored the Tartans 30-16 in the paint.
Women's action
For the second consecutive year, Williams dominated its matchup with nationally ranked Babson. The Ephs built a 21-point halftime lead and thumped the No. 20 Beavers 62-42. Babson shot 24.6 percent from the field (14-for-57) while four of Williams starters scored double-figures. The loss snaps Babson's 46-game home winning streak dating back to January 24, 2009. New Paltz State rallied at Plattsburgh State to send the game to overtime where the Hawks beat the Cardinals 75-71. Alex McCullough scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for New Paltz State (13-0, 7-0).
Mary Kate Cusack came off the bench to score 17 points and lead St. John Fisher past Ithaca 63-59. The Cardinals' win snaps Ithaca's eight-game winning streak.
Rhodes defeated Millsaps 58-51 to take over first place in the SAA. The Lynx trailed by eight at the half but rallied to improve to 13-1.
