Chicago defeated New York U. to win its second consecutive UAA title and the first automatic bid into the NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament.
Chicago held a two-point lead at the half but started the second frame on a 7-0 run. The Maroons held the Violets to 19 second-half points. Bryanne Halfhill's back-to-back three pointers in the closing minutes sealed the 57-42 victory and punched Chicago's ticket to the NCAA tournament.
Elsewhere in the UAA, Case Western upended No. 12 Rochester 58-57 on an Evy Iacono eight-footer with nine seconds left. Iacono finished with 27 points and nine rebounds to push the Spartans record to 13-10, 6-6.
Buffalo State locked up the top seed in the SUNYAC women's tournament with a 71-61 at Oswego State. Staci McElroy notched a double-double (19 points, 10 rebounds) and the 1,000th point of her career. The Bengals got the help they needed from New Paltz State, which knocked off Oneonta State 49-44 in overtime.
No. 3 George Fox beat Linfield 66-52 to stay undefeated. Virginia Wesleyan topped Hollins 58-49 to win its 20th game and 17th in the ODAC.
Men's action
Both nationally ranked UAA teams lost on the road keeping the conference race wide open. Brandeis knocked off No. 24 Washington 79-69. No. 18 Emory missed its chance to gain ground on Washington U. when the Eagles lost at Carnegie Mellon 82-79. New York U. defeated Chicago 79-69 to move within a game of first place Washington U. The Violets host the Bears on Sunday.
No. 16 Oswego State held off Buffalo State 78-73 to win its 32nd consecutive SUNYAC game. Jake Simmons scored 30 points for the Bengals which have a one-game lead on Brockport State and Geneseo State for third place.
Union defeated Clarkson 71-61 in the battle of two teams that were tied for the last Liberty League playoff spot. Skidmore beat RPI to eliminate the Red Hawks from the playoff chase.
