In the end, 1-2 to meet for title

Washington U. and Amherst were No. 1 and No. 2 in the D3hoops.com preseason Top 25, and after more than 5,000 games, the Bears and Lord Jeffs will meet for the 2008 Division III men's basketball national championship.

Andrew Olson recorded a triple-double, with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Lord Jeffs kept their championship defense on track, beating Ursinus 84-58. And for the Bears, it was a 30-point performance from Troy Ruths that got Wash U to the title game, in an 89-74 win against Hope. Scroll down for women's coverage.

&&g-boxl&&Wash U shot 17-for-26 from the floor in the second half as the Bears led by as many as 17. Aaron Thompson scored 15, all in the second half, to help give the Bears the lead.

“I think we were just hitting on cylinders tonight,” said Ruths. “Aaron Thompson's run put us in the lead, and then we used our experience to keep it there.”

In the first game, Amherst also got 18 from Fletcher Walters and 17 from Brian Baskauskas as the Lord Jeffs went on a 27-10 run to pull out to a 35-point second half lead. John Noonan led Ursinus with 18 points and Michael Shema added 13, but Nick Shattuck, hobbled by injuries, was held to 10 and turned the ball over seven times.
