Welcome to conference season

It's that time of year again -- conference play in the CCIW. It looks like we're in for another bumpy ride. Just ask No. 5 Augustana, who was upset on the road by North Park 67-58. The Vikings of North Park finished just 5-9 in the CCIW last year and haven't been over .500 in conference play since 1996. The Vikings of Augustana finished atop the standings the past two seasons.

No. 13 Wheaton (Ill.) avoided the same fate with a 70-64 win against Carthage, overcoming a 16-point second half Red Men lead. Ben Panner poured in 28 points for the Thunder who have won seven straight. No. 10 Elmhurst cruised past Millikin 98-78, lifted by Ryan Burks' 31 points.

The WIAC knows upsets as well and had another when UW-Platteville rolled over No. 12 UW-Oshkosh 72-53. After a Titans' three-pointer tied the game with under ten minutes left, the Pioneers closed the game with a 25-6 run. Matt Goodwin's three-pointer with one second left gave No. 15 UW-Whitewater a win against UW-La Crosse, 65-62.

Wednesday's men's scores and women's scores.

Ben Strong scored 34 points as No. 11 Guilford snapped Hampden-Sydney's seven-game win streak 93-79. The Quakers' big week continues as they host Randolph-Macon (8-2) and No. 17 Virginia Wesleyan (8-2). The Marlins held Bridgewater (Va.) to just 19 first half points and never looked back in a 76-63 victory.

The number of undefeated men's teams dropped as WPI dropped Coast Guard 71-62. The Engineers held the Bears without a field goal for the final 6:11 of the game. In the JP Morgan Chase Scholarship Tournament, Geneseo State narrowly remained perfect with a 67-66 OT win against NAIA Roberts Wesleyan, thanks to Jeff Howe's putback as time expired. No. 1 Rochester needed no such heroics in crunching Keuka 81-37. On Thursday the Yellow Jackets play previously ranked Brockport State who ended its three-game skid with an 88-87 win at St. John Fisher.

In women's play No. 1 Hope defeated archrival Calvin 56-39 on the road to stay perfect. Carrie Snikkers satisfied the Flying Dutchmen with a double-double (15 points, 12 rebounds) in the win. No. 2 UW-Whitewater also stayed undefeated by blasting UW-La Crosse 92-62. And it was another night with four players reaching the 1,000-point milestone.

No. 19 Baldwin-Wallace won its seventh in a row, defeating Otterbein 84-70. UW-Eau Claire started the game on a 23-3 run and it didn't get any better for UW-Superior as the Blugolds won 54-21. The No. 25 Eastern Connecticut women improved to 12-0 with a win at Worcester State. Carrie Embree filled the stat line for St. Thomas with 21 points, 15 rebounds and three blocked shots in a 66-54 win against Augsburg, moving the Tommies into first in the MIAC. Central snapped a 12-game losing streak against Luther as Ashley Gerst scored 18 points, including two free throws with a second remaining in the 67-63 win.
