Gallaudet interim athletic director Mike Weinstock announced the selection of Jeb Barber as the new men's basketball head coach. He replaces Jimmy DeStefano, who was removed from the head coach and athletic director positions over the summer following violations in the university's volleyball program which caused the department to be placed on two years' probation.

DeStefano compiled a career record of 130-268 in 16 seasons as head coach.

"I'm excited to have John join our coaches and also look forward to the experience he brings to our growing pool of talent," Weinstock said.

Barber comes to Gallaudet from Villa Julie, where he was an assistant men's basketball coach assistant athletic director, sports information director and men's tennis coach.

Under his assistance the Mustangs earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2006, and an automatic berth after winning the North Eastern Athletic Conference championship in 2007.

Barber will begin his duties at Gallaudet on Sept. 24.

Kevin Cook comes to Gallaudet as women's coach after 10 years as an assistant coach with the WNBA's Houston Comets. In 2006, Kevin was named head coach of the Nigerian national team that competed in the 2006 World Championships in Brazil.

Cook replaces Kylan Loney, who resigned after one season, in which the Bison went 3-22.

Cook served on the winning Western Conference all-star staff in the first three WNBA All-Star games as well as touring Brazil as coach with the WNBA All-Stars in 1998. Prior to his stint with the Comets, Cook served two years as head coach at Garden City College, including a 20-win season plus a No. 12 national ranking. Kevin also has 10 years' experience at the college level at Kansas, participating in four conference championships and a number of NCAA tournaments.

In 2001, Cook coached a traveling team that played against Division I institutions in preseason exhibition games. His team went 10-1 including victories over Rutgers, Maryland, West Virginia and current national champion Connecticut.

Cook's experience also includes co-authoring a basketball book with the first female Harlem Globetrotter, Lynette Woodard, and had a small role in the movie Cottonmouth. He has done TV and radio commentary for NCAA women's basketball games and speaks regularly for civic groups and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Cook will begin his duties at Gallaudet on Oct. 9 due to overseas coaching commitments.
