USAC blocks out GSAC

The two leagues may well merge eventually, or the USA South might absorb the Great South, but on Saturday night two USAC teams rejected their GSAC opponents in a pair of victories. Averett had six blocked shots in its 74-70 win against Maryville (Tenn.) and Methodist rejected eight in a 102-98 win against Piedmont.

For Maryville, it was just the second loss in nine games this season as Averett (4-5) was led by Jonathan Rumley's 13 points, while Mike Miller came off the bench for a season-high 11. Photo gallery. Methodist improved to 6-3 behind six scorers in double figures, outweighing the 35 points from Piedmont's Jake Baldwin.

Women's No. 1 Mary Washington and No. 5 UW-Whitewater each remained unbeaten heading into their meeting on Sunday, as the Eagles defeated Concordia (Wis.) 71-62 and the Warhawks routed Widener 73-42. Saturday's women's scores.

&&b-boxl&&Puget Sound fell at NAIA scholarship program Westmont, 78-75, for its first defeat of the season. Concordia-Austin fared better as Brad Walker's 28 points led the Tornadoes to a 102-97 win over NAIA II ranked Hastings.

Immaculata's first loss was a painful one, as the Mighty Mac men fell 91-59 at Randolph-Macon. Calvin fell for the second consecutive night at Montclair State, as the hosts upended the No. 24 Knights 72-69. Salem State won the tournament by beating Keene State. St. John's finally won at UW-Whitewater and Wesley got its shot against Mount Union -- if only this were still football season. Central's Keith Pedersen shot 13-for-13 from the floor in the Dutch's 90-77 win against William Woods. Saturday's men's scores.

Wilmington won the rematch of the 2004 national championship game, rolling past Bowdoin 73-54. Megan Scheele scored 37 points on Megan Scheele/New Glarus day for Edgewood, but it wasn't enough as UW-Platteville won 94-92 in double overtime. Scheele's hometown, New Glarus, got free admission in celebration of her 1,000th career point earlier in the season. Capital's Caitlin Graessle shot 7-for-10 from three-point range and scored 38 points in the Crusaders' 80-70 win against Defiance. No. 14 Randolph-Macon handed Marymount its first loss of the season, 54-49.
