Hope, HPU nab crowd crown

The Howard Payne women and Hope men were Division III basketball's attendance leaders in 2006-07, according to figures released by the NCAA.

Howard Payne, which had two of the three largest crowds in Division III history, finished with an average attendance of 1,490 over 17 regular season home dates. This does not include an announced crowd of 4,356 in the Yellow Jackets' second-round NCAA Tournament win.

The Division III-wide per-game women's attendance figure of 242 was a Division III record. Hanover, Husson, Ithaca, Pitt-Bradford, St. Lawrence, Spelman and Thomas did not report women's attendance figures and were not included in the average.

Hope's men averaged 2,923 in attendance over 15 home dates, a total of 43,848. Total attendance in Division III men's basketball was listed at 1,947,730, an average of 430, identical to 2005-06. The NCAA Tournament averaged 1,443 fans over 42 sessions.

In men's, Hope was followed by Wooster (1,943), Calvin (1,891), Illinois Wesleyan (1,700) and UW-Stevens Point (1,643). Maryville (Tenn.), Otterbein, Mississippi College, Christopher Newport and UW-Stout rounded out the top 10. Howard Payne was followed on the women's side by UW-Stout (1,444), Bowdoin (1,337), Hope (1,224) and NYU (1,066). Capital, Christopher Newport, Hardin-Simmons, Scranton and UW-Eau Claire round out the top 10.
