Brandeis assistant gets UNE's top job

The University of New England has selected Anthony Ewing as its new women's head basketball coach. Ewing replaces Curt Smyth, who stepped down after 10 seasons as head coach at UNE.

Ewing, a Portland, Maine native, comes to Biddeford from Brandeis, where he served as associate head coach and top assistant for six seasons. During Ewing's time at Brandeis, the Judges averaged more than 18 wins per season, including 20-win seasons each of the past four years.

Prior to his tenure at Brandeis, Ewing served as top assistant coach at Keene State for five years. He was the team's recruiting coordinator and academic coordinator.

Ewing is a 1995 graduate of Keene State, where he attained a bachelor's degree in physical education with a specialization in sports management. He is currently working towards his master's degree in sociology at Brandeis.

UNE director of athletics Kim Allen feels Ewing is an ideal choice to lead the Nor'easters' women's basketball program.

“Anthony brings a great combination of basketball knowledge, professionalism and recruiting expertise,” Allen said. “He is an excellent addition to our staff, and I believe he has the ability to lead our program to prominence within our conference and nationally.”

Smyth, who is UNE's assistant director of athletics and sports information director, totaled a 142-118 record in his 10 seasons. The Nor'easters finished with a 12-14 mark in 2006-07.
