Power outages

The two best conferences in Division III men's basketball got exactly two teams in the NCAA Tournament. So much for this brave new world -- the four at-large bids the leagues combined for last year seem so long ago.

Hopefully next year's strength of schedule formula will recognize the strength of the league.

The NCAA announced who would be playing in this year's NCAA Tournament -- view the men's and women's selections. We'll find out later this morning who is playing whom when the NCAA releases the brackets.

Elmhurst wasn't happy about being left out either, though their measurements in the official stated NCAA criteria made it clear the Bluejays would not be. "I know that every year there a number of upsets in conference tournaments that have an outcome on the at-large selection process, and this year was no exception," coach Mark Scherer said in a school release. "But if you're going to crown a national champion in a tournament, then you have to have the nation's best teams in the tournament, otherwise it looks more like a national invitational, than a championship tournament."

Elmhurst fell to Augustana 78-70 in Saturday's CCIW title game. Without a home loss to Millikin (9-16) on Jan. 31, Elmhurst might have had a shot. It was the only game Millikin won after Jan. 10.

But it was business as usual for the women's tournament. There wasn't much to complain about. Hardin-Simmons' bubble burst after we made our projections putting the Cowgirls in the final Pool C slot. Dickinson's loss in the Centennial final sealed HSU's fate.

Our projections improved in the second year of the expanded tournament, hitting all but two teams in each tournament. Scroll down to see our projections and match them up against reality. Also page down for more info, including Sunday's games and our projections. Keep checking back! Brackets at 9 a.m. Monday!
