McDaniel head men's basketball coach Bob Flynn died of a heart attack late Friday night. He was 49.
Flynn had led his Green Terror to a 7-6 mark after McDaniel posted a 9-16 record his first season. McDaniel had averaged just over five wins per season in the three seasons before his arrival. He was interviewed (audio link) by D3hoops.com's Pat Cummings last season about his attempts to turn the McDaniel program around.
McDaniel's home game against Ursinus scheduled for this afternoon was postponed. The squad is next slated to be in action on Wednesday at home against Washington College. A decision on that game will be made early next week.
"The entire athletics department is deeply saddened by the loss of Coach Flynn," athletics director Jamie Smith said. "His dedication and love for the game were contagious, yet he always remembered that these young men were students first. The lessons they learned from their coach will help them through this difficult time."
Flynn had previously spent five years at St. Mary's (Md.), compiling a 51-77 overall record from 1994-95 to 1998-99, including 28-24 in his final two seasons. He went 103-76 at Baltimore's Cardinal Gibbons high school before coming to McDaniel.
He is survived by his wife, Tina, a teenage daughter and two 12-year-old sons. The viewing will take place at Sterling, Ashton, Schwab and Witzke Funeral Home on Edmondson Ave. in Catonsville on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 3-6 p.m.
Longtime assistant coach Kevin Selby will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
