For the second consecutive year, the UW-Stout women handed a highly ranked opponent its first loss of the season in a holiday tournament. The No. 20 Blue Devils knocked off No. 9 McMurry 65-60 on the opening night of Southwestern's holiday tournament. Last year UW-Stout upended then-unbeaten Messiah during the holiday break. McMurry dropped to 8-1 despite 28 points and 15 rebounds from All-American Tarra Richardson.
No. 15 Calvin improved to 7-1 with a 70-62 win over No. 23 Puget Sound. The Knights used a 6-0 spurt to erase the Loggers' one-point halftime advantage and led the rest of the way.
No. 5 DePauw, No. 14 Simpson and No. 21 Medaille opened the Surf 'n' Slam tournament with first round victories setting up interesting Friday matchups. The Tigers and Lady Mavs will meet in a battle of once-beaten ranked teams while the undefeated Storm plays host team Point Loma Nazarene, which is ranked in the NAIA.
In men's action No. 5 UW-Stevens Point suffered its first loss of the season, falling 101-92 at Division II Northern Michigan. Edgewood ended Baldwin-Wallace's modest four game win streak, beating the Yellow Jackets 72-64. The Eagles will meet Simpson in the Cactus Jam Classic final after the Storm stopped Ramapo 86-71.
Friday's men's games include a D3hoopsNet broadcast between No. 7 Ohio Northern and No. 1 Wooster at Wooster's Mose Hole tournament, tipping off at 7:30 p.m. ET. The tournament's other opening round game between Calvin and UW-La Crosse will air at 5:30.
