Rochester knocks off top-ranked Scranton

No. 14 Rochester avenged its loss to Scranton in last year's Sweet 16 by upending the No. 1 Lady Royals 69-51.

The Yellow Jackets held Scranton to 28.8% shooting from the floor in the win, including 7-for-31 (22.6%) in the second half.

Danielle Muller led Rochester (2-0) with 17 points and tournament MVP Alex Porter added 13 points and pulled down a game-high 20 rebounds. The Yellow Jackets shot 47.2% from the field in the second-half to overcome a 32-25 halftime deficit and pulled down 15 offensive rebounds en route to a 48-39 advantage on the glass.

Saturday's women's scores.

Senior guard Julie Henderson canned the game-winning jumper with two seconds left in the game and junior guard Jordyn Boles scored a game-high 18 points as No. 4 Hope beat No. 9 Baldwin-Wallace 68-66. No. 10 Messiah won at home against No. 8 Mary Washington 56-47.

On the men's side, there were some significant surprises as well. Illinois Wesleyan, without four of its five starters from last season's national semifinal team, rallied from 21 points down in the second half and eked out a one-point victory in overtime over No. 4 UW-Whitewater.

Alvernia got 28 points from Garrett Etzel to win at home over No. 6 Baldwin-Wallace. Alvernia graduated much of its talent from its 2005-06 team so this was a significant victory and most impressively it held All-American Tori Davis to just 14 points. Rhode Island College picked up a nice credibility-building win topping No. 12 Tufts, 95-84 at Tufts' tip-off tournament. The Anchormen, who returned all five starters from last year's ECAC title team, are 2-0 not including an exhibition win over Division I Iona. No. 25 UW-Stevens Point drilled No. 17 Carroll, 95-73.

The performance of the day came from Susquehanna's Josh Robinson, who scored 52 points helping his team defeat King's 98-97 in the championship game of the Pepsi/Weis Markets Tip-Off Tournament. With No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan not opening until later this week, No. 2 Wooster was the highest-rated winner, routing Mount Union. Check out the men's scoreboard.

Scranton wasn't alone among highly ranked women's upset victims. No.3 DePauw lost at Illinois Wesleyan, 77-68. No. 5 Wheaton was upended by Wilmington, 68-59, as Katie Streck poured in 25 points for the Quakers. A day after losing to DePauw, No. 12 Washington University dropped to an unheard-of 0-2 by falling to Central, 80-69. Salem State won its season-opening tournament, edging out No. 17 Williams, 65-62.

No. 2 Bowdoin debuted for 2006-07 routing Smith for its 71st straight home win. The Polar Bears put the game away on the strength of a 53-14 second half. No. 15 Brandeis also won with ease, topping Regis (Mass.).

No. 7 Hardin-Simmons got past No. 22 Trinity, marking the second straight day that the Tigers lost to a Top 25 foe.
