Jennifer Britz, who served as an assistant women's coach at
Augsburg in the 2003-04 season, has been named the team's new head
coach, women's athletic director Marilyn Florian announced Monday,
May 5.
Britz was an assistant coach under Dave Johnson, who resigned in
March after one season as head coach. In 2003-04, Augsburg finished
5-20 overall, 5-17 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference.
In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Britz will also teach
in Augsburg's Health and Physical Education department, as well as
serve as equipment supervisor for women's athletics/Health and
Physical Education.
"We are excited for the opportunity to hire Jennifer Britz as our
head women's basketball coach," Florian said. "She has an
outstanding coaching background in both NCAA Divisions II and III,
and she is a great addition to the Augsburg athletic department. We
are looking forward to her energy, direction and vision in leading
the Augsburg women's basketball program into the future."
A native of St. Peter, Minn., Britz (maiden name Jennifer
Sylvester) was a four-year letterwinner, three-year starter and
two-time honorable-mention All-North Central Conference selection
during her playing days (1996-2000) at Division II South Dakota
State.
A point guard, she led the Jackrabbits in assists her sophomore,
junior and senior seasons, and led the team in steals her senior
campaign. She averaged 8.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists per
game during her career. She is fifth in school history in career
assists (483) and 13th in career 3-pointers (55). Her Jackrabbits
qualified for the NCAA Tournament in the 1998-99 season.
Academically, Britz earned Academic All-North Central Conference
honors three times, and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District
selection in 2000. She also earned the SDSU Gold Medal academic
award three times, was president of the school's Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee her senior year and was a conference SAAC
representative in 1998.
She earned her bachelor's degree in health and physical education
from SDSU in 2001 and her master's degree in exercise training from
St. Cloud State in 2003.
After graduating from South Dakota State, she served as a student
assistant coach at her alma mater in the 2000-01 season, before
working for two seasons (2001-03) as a graduate assistant coach at
St. Cloud State, another Division II school. In two seasons with
the Huskies, Britz served as a scout, administrator and recruiter,
in addition to her coaching duties. She had the same
responsibilities in her one season as an assistant coach at
Augsburg in 2003-04.
